Ellarigoo Namaskaara,

I have replied to Mr. Shastry’s letter published in Kannada Dailies regarding the “Unicode” and KGP’s effort. I have faxed this on Wednesday to all the Kannada Dailies. In that reply, I have questioned the moral right of Mr. Shastry to request others to join hands in development of Kannada Software without making the NUDI open source. I have also questioned Mr. Shastry that how far the KGP has impartially helped the people who have contributed towards the Kannada Computing Sector.

Please find herewith attached copy of the reply sent to all Kannada Dailies. I feel this is the right time, to each one of us, to ask such questions to Mr. Shastry on the remaining points in the contents of his letter published.

With regards

Sathyanarayana.

I have attached my reply to that. I have answered the PR-37 and the arkavattu issues. I
have left out two issues-

He is requesting people to join hands with KGP. Everyone is saying the same thing -
make Nudi opensource so that people can improve it.

He says that he has discussed with many people and then has finalised his reply to PR-
37. With whom he has discussed? There is no posting from him in any Unicode, Indic
Unicode or Kannada mailing lists on this topic. He has never called a meeting to discuss
this issue.

I request people in this list to write a letter to the editors asking these two questions. If
you want you can divide the issues among yourself -one person asking one question.

Regards,
Pavanaja

Namaskaara Sir,

I have replied to Mr. Shastry’s letter published in Kannada Dailies regarding the “Unicode” and KGP’s effort. Udayavani has published my reply to-day.

I feel this is the right time, to each one of us, to ask such questions to Mr. Shastry on the remaining points in the contents of his letter published.

Following is the Translated version of Kannada Text Sent to the News Papers.

___________________________________________

Sampadakarige Namaskaara

I have served Kannada Ganaka Parishath (KGP)as Founder Secretary for a period of more than four years. Presently, I have maintained a distance from KGP for the reasons that it has many internal problems within. I too have contributed to the field of Kannada Computing in my own way. Recently, discussions in a big way is on in internet among the Kannadigas allover the world regarding the Kannada and Computing, as a result many truths has come out. – This introduction is for your (Editors of News Papers) kind information only.

Recently, in major Kannada News Papers, Mrs. Srinatha Shastry, General Secretary of KGP has expressed his views on Kannada and UNICODE and has regretted for having targeted the KGP for not having delivered the goods properly. I want to express my views on this subject as below and bring some important facts, left out, in interest of the users of Kannada language on Computers.

Mr. Shastry has said that he has done many things in finalizing the UNICODE standards for Kannada as representative of Kannadigas and contributed much to Kannada Computing. OK let us accept all this. But, NUDI has a ‘Save As Unicode’ facility and the file so saved can be used for information exchange between the users of Windows-98 and Windows XP. The problem is if you open the Unicode file in NUDI itself for editing, you find ‘junk’ instead of the text already typed and saved. In this case, we can only open the file in Windows-XP, and Unicode in NUDI software running on Window-98 is of no use. It is very much possible to exchange the information between the users of Windows-98 and XP. This will be easier only when one can edit a file containing Unicode Text in Windows-98. For this the saved file containing the Unicode Kannada Text should be converted back to NUDI COMPATIBLE on the fly before user opens it for editing in NUDI Software running on Windows 98. Any way, to save it back in Unicode, already there is the feature of ‘Save As Unicode’ in NUDI. Using the feature user can save it back as UNICODE TEXT FILE. Knowingly the fact that Windows-98 don’t support the UNICODE, the KGP has neglected it and has not taken any steps to incorporate a small feature to open the Unicode file as Nudi compatible while editing. Why any one should get angry if we say the truth that the KGP is irresponsible in this aspect. This is a very easy task to incorporate but still why it has not been done? And Why there must be a hitch in the exchange of information between users of Windows-98 and XP?. Is this the way of doing things by so called (?) professional organization like KGP?

Mr. Shastry says that KGP is aware of all the aspects of Kannada Computing. Don’t he know that the UNICODE TEXT file has to be converted back so as to edit it in NUDI?. If any one asks these questions, will it be a complaint against the KGP? He has also said that the KGP will act according to the priorities. Let the KGP set aside the priorities of its Office bearers and concentrate on the priorities of the end users. He has appealed all interested to join hands in constructive work of Kannada Software Development. In these lines, many Kannadigas were very much interested to involve in the constructive task of fixing the bugs in the NUDI Software which still exist and requested KGP to make it Open Source. But, KGP has turned a deaf ear and dishonored the request. Hence, KGP or Mr. Shastry has no moral right to make such appeal and ask the people to join hands with them, I feel. By acting as ‘Big Brother’ in Kannada Software Development KGP has invited many problems and scams to it. Now, it is requesting others to work for Kannada Computing in their own capacities and introduce useful programs for benefit of the end users. IT IS REALLY QUESTIONABLE THAT HOW FAR THE KGP OR MR. SHASTRY HAVE REALLY CO-OPERATED AND SUPPORTED IMPARTIALLY THE PEOPLE WHO HAD APPROACHED THEM FOR SUCH CO-OPERATION AND SUPPORT ?

With regards

A. Sathyanarayana.
